Handicapped access during the 2013 Olympic Winter Season

The Merano 2000 family skiing and hiking region enjoys great popularity with locals as well as visitors. In winter it is rated highly for its mild temperatures, magnificent panoramic views and 40 km of perfectly groomed slopes for families and recreational skiers.

In addition to a wide range of family activities, the high plateau above the spa town of Merano is also known for its barrier-free handicapped access, allowing disabled guests to also enjoy this winter sports region. As a recent study by the Social Cooperative Independent L confirms, the cable car Merano 2000 recreational area is well suited to visitors with disabilities.

The cable car cabins are not accessed via stairway but are instead provided with ground-level boarding ramps, and the summit station is equipped with an elevator that provides access to the Panorama Bistro.

Thus, the Merano 2000 skiing paradise is a popular training area for winter sport athletes with disabilities. Every year the skiing section of the Sports Club Merano holds competitions for skiers with disabilities. The clubs "Freunde der Behinderten" and "Amici degli Handicappati" (Friends of the Disabled) train here regularly with the Merano 2000 Ski School.

Special Olympics 2013

A particular highlight of the 2012/2013 winter season will be the hosting of the National Winter Games of the 2012/2013 Special Olympics at Merano 2000, from 10-15 January 2013. Nearly 400 athletes supported by 200 health professionals will compete for medals on Merano's local mountain in Alpine, Nordic and snowboard competitions
