South Tyrol’s ecclesiastical status is also reflected in the holiday region of Avelengo and Verano. Dozens of churches, chapels, and small memorials have been erected over the course of the centuries.
Vestiges range from early medieval chapels like Saint Catherine to Gothic churches like the Parish Church of St. Nicholas or the Parish Church of St. John, with its enigmatic – perhaps even pagan – relief.
Little mountain churches like the Chapel of St. Oswald or the Chapel of St. James are common. The Church of St. Anna in Aschl, which was charitably founded in the early twentieth century, is worth as look, as is the the Sakramentshäusl ambry, a mysterious jewel near Nusserhof Farm in Avelengo.
Hiking trails and historical paths connect the individual sights. Pilgrims, traders, and monks once used these mountain pathways to reach other regions – preferring them to those leading through the inhospitable and swampy valleys.
