Tyrol Castle is the ancestral home of the Counts of Tyrol. The foundation stone was laid in the eleventh century. The structure was dubbed Schloss Tirol when Meinhard II, Count of Tyrol, founded the County of Tyrol in the thirteenth century.
Today, the castle houses the South Tyrol Museum of Culture and History. The museum is an interactive journey through the castle’s evolution over the centuries and highlights the most important themes of the history of the province, including its art and social history. The exhibits also delineate what everyday life was like at Tyrol Castle back in the Middle Ages. The museum also examines twentieth-century history, on twenty different levels in the castle’s keep. In addition, Tyrol Castle serves as a venue for major temporary exhibitions every year.
Below the castle, there is a refuge for local avifauna, where injured birds are nursed back to health and released into the wild. There is a flight show twice a day featuring vultures, eagles and falcons. Visitors can also view the animals outside of the flight shows.
