Runkelstein Castle

Runkelstein Castle was built in 1237 atop a high porphyry crag towering over the entrance to Sarentino Valley.

The castle in Bolzano is also known as Bilderburg (Bilder meaning ‘pictures’ and Burg meaning ‘castle’ in German) because it houses the most elaborate and oldest secular medieval fresco cycle. The frescoes, which visitors can view, depict chivalric legends, real life at court, and the hunt: they tell of the passions between knights and ladies of the court and set the scene for the literature of the time. In addition, there are objects from the former armoury, illustrations of the castle, and sections of the secular frescoes on display.

Every year, there are exhibitions focusing on various historical and cultural themes, and in summer there are a wide variety of cultural events. There is also a tavern inside the castle.
