Palaces and Castles

With more than 800 palaces, castles, ruins, Tyrolean-style manors, and historical mansions, the small province of South Tyrol has more castles than any other region in Europe.

Some of the most spectacular castles can be found in the region of Meraner Land, directly beneath the high plateau of Avelengo and Verano. Schenna Castle, which houses the Mausoleum of Archduke Johann, and Tyrol Castle, which is the headquarters of the province’s historical museum and has a refuge for avifauna, are two of the most important. The Prince's Castle in Merano and Lebenberg Castle in Cermes both merit a visit.

The fairy-tale Runkelstein Castle, above the province capital of Bolzano, offers the largest secular fresco cycle of the late Middle Ages while the largest collection of armour can be found at well-fortified Churburg Castle, in the Venosta Valley. In addition to these important ruins, there are numerous other actively used castles like Sigmundskron Castle in Bolzano, which is now the headquarters of the Firmian Messner Mountain Museum.
