Culture in South Tyrol

South Tyrol’s colourful history has left its distinctive mark on the region.

In addition to 800 castles, palaces, and manor houses—including the Prince's Castle in Merano and the castles in Cermes, Scena, and Tirolo – there are countless churches and chapels still to be found in South Tyrol.

Attractions in Avelengo and Verano

The Stoanernen Mandeln (Men of Stone), way up high on the Monzoccolo(Tschögglberg) Plateau, date back to before documented history. Churches, chapels, and monuments bear witness to centuries long gone: among them are the Church of St. Catherine, parish churches like St. Nicholas in Verano and St. John in Avelengo, and mountain churches such as the Chapel of St. Oswald and the Chapel of St. Jacob. The enigmatic Sakramentshäusl, an ambry in Avelengo, is definitely worth a look as well. The Knottnkino (Rock Cinema), on Rotsteinkogel Knoll is set up like an outdoor cinema: the outlook point is very modern and always worth a visit.

Arts, Culture, and Events

You’ll find that the holiday region Merano and Environs offers musical events, festivals, concerts, celebrations and a wide array of exhibitions throughout the course of the year. The informative and interactive museums relate the history of the province in a clever way: particularly notable are South Tyrol’s Museum of History at Tyrol Castle and the Tourism at Trauttmansdorff Castle. The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle and the new Terme Merano, a thermal bath complex in the city centre, are two absolute musts in town.
